Secretary, MoEA, Royal Government of Bhutan
Dasho Yeshi Wangdi is the Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) of the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB), and looks after the national policy and planning functions of Bhutan’s hydropower, besides also the Trade, Industry and Minerals sectors. He has been actively involved in all SAARC, sub-regional forums and SARI/EI activities in the field of power sector and, currently he is the Chair of SARI/EI steering committee.
Dasho Yeshi Wangdi has more than 30 years of experience in the Power Sector. Before assuming the current post of Secretary of MoEA, he served as the Director General of the Department of Hydropower & Power Systems (DHPS) from September 2007 to May 2015. Before joining the DoE in 2007, Dasho Yeshi looked after Bhutan’s first mega hydropower plant – the 336MW Chhukha that stands as the flagship of successful Bhutan-India friendship and cooperation in the power sector.
Dasho Yeshi played a crucial role in restructuring the Bhutan’s power sector including bringing the hydropower generation sector under one umbrella through the creation of Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) in 2008. Dasho served as the Member Secretary to the Empowered Joint Group (EJG) that was constituted to fast-track the development of hydropower projects under the “10,000 MW by 2020” understanding reached between Bhutan and India in 2008.
For the dedicated service rendered and in recognition of his contributions, Dasho Yeshi was awarded the Red Scarf by His Majesty the King of Bhutan in December 2012.
Dasho Yeshi has an engineering Degree (Electrical) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri, USA.
